• Deductible: The deductible is the amount that vehicle owners have to pay themselves in the event of damage. A higher deductible can reduce the insurance premium.

STRUCTURE OF CAR INSURANCE
From basic to complete protection

In Switzerland, there are three types of car insurance: third-party liability, partial and fully comprehensive insurance. Each of these types of insurance offers specific coverage and is suitable for different needs.

Liability

Third party liability insurance is compulsory for all vehicle owners in Switzerland. It covers damage caused by vehicle owners to others with their vehicle, including property damage and personal injury. This insurance is crucial because it protects vehicle owners from the high costs that can arise in the event of an accident involving a third party. Although the benefits of third party liability insurance are largely similar across all providers in Switzerland, there are differences in premiums and customer service.

Partial insurance

Partial comprehensive insurance is a voluntary additional insurance that covers damage to your own vehicle caused by external events such as hail, floods, theft, vandalism, fire or collisions with animals. This insurance is recommended for vehicle owners who want to insure their vehicle against such unforeseeable events.

Fully comprehensive insurance

Fully comprehensive insurance offers the most comprehensive protection. It includes the services of partial comprehensive insurance as well as cover for damage that vehicle owners themselves cause to their vehicle, for example in an accident. This type of insurance is particularly recommended for new or valuable vehicles as it offers comprehensive protection. In the event of a claim, fully comprehensive insurance reimburses the current value of the vehicle, not its new value.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the most frequently asked questions from our customers

Car insurance premiums in Switzerland are calculated based on various factors, including the age and model of the vehicle, the owner’s driving history, the coverage chosen and the deductible. Insurance companies use statistical data and risk assessments to calculate the likelihood of damage and set the premium accordingly.

Yes, a higher deductible usually reduces the amount of the premium payment.

Parking damage cover is an additional option for your car insurance that pays for damage caused to your parked vehicle without the perpetrator being able to be identified. However, if you cause damage to your car yourself while parking or pulling out, this is considered comprehensive insurance, which can be covered by comprehensive insurance, not parking damage cover.

You can usually cancel your car insurance with 1 to 3 months’ notice before the contract expires. There are also special circumstances in which you can cancel, such as after a claim or if you sell your vehicle. Remember to give your cancellation in writing, preferably by registered mail.
